FactoryTalk Optix consists of different software components that run on different parts of your automation system.

System Software Description

Development system

FactoryTalk Optix Studio

Integrated development environment with a framework of functional modules for designing and compiling HMI or Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

(optional) External code editor

A third-party code editor for customizing, extending, or adding new features by developing custom C# code.
Tip: Rockwell Automation recommends using Microsoft Visual Studio 2022 or Microsoft Visual Studio Code as the default code editor. Some development assistance features may not be available when using a different code editor.

Client system

FactoryTalk Optix Application

An HMI or IoT application developed and compiled in FactoryTalk Optix Studio.

FactoryTalk Optix Application Update Service

Software that is installed on the target device for updating and deploying FactoryTalk Optix Applications from FactoryTalk Optix Studio to the target devices.

FactoryTalk Optix Runtime Service Service for running FactoryTalk Optix as a service on the runtime device with or without a user interface. Select this option when installing the  Runtime Tools on the target device.
